The Up-side of Being an Introvert

We were assigned to create three images for a TIME article called "The Up-side of being an Introvert". Here's the full page spread and two tiny images meant to visually explain introversion and extroversion. The top piece is acrylic with some PS color adjustment and the bottom two are digital.

It's been a bit. Finals didn't turn out as well as I expected so I'm going to instead update with some personal stuff from over the break.

I like the bits better than the whole, and maybe sometime I'll post a few detail shots, but for now I'm real tired of looking at this.

50/50

A movie review for the movie 50/50 with Joseph Gordon Levitt. He has a very distinct face but I had a hard time getting his profile right! The background is made up of cells that slowly become cancerous from left to right. D: It was quite a good dramedy.

Humanitas

For Lifestyles we were given a "Vices and Virtues" assignment. Here is Humanitas (Kindness), and you can see Invidia (Envy) in the background. Unfortunately Envy's photoshop file was corrupted and my heart wept for days but Humanitas made it through!

Somewhere during crit for the sketches someone suggested "Sailor Moon meets Olive Garden meets Fairy Princesses", and so it was. It was a lot of fun doing ostentatious dresses and ridiculous hair, but I'm going to start playing around with different methods of applying colors. The color and composition of this thing isn't really doing it for me.

Paper Dolls: Week 3

Decided to make it a musician themed week. Yes, Justin does count.

Jabberwocky

I got to illustrate Jabberwocky by Carroll for Character Design! We were required not to draw in our native style but rather to try and imitate Mary Blair. I don't do lineless very often so it was a challenge, but by the end of the assignment I found the process soothing.

This was the first round of drafts where we had to figure out what the all the babble in the poem is referring to. The designs were pretty well received with the exception of my bandersnatch. I don't know what's going on either.

The last image is the scene where my exhausted boy becomes beamish after single handedly (ehehh) vorpals the Jabberwocky before he goes galumping back. The center bit is alright but composition isn't really doing it for me.

The dolls bundle up, and so do I. It's freezing in Baltimore.

Just some ladies trying on lingerie together. I'm pretty pleased I get to draw this stuff for school.

The composition turned out alright, but this project taught me that digital line work kills. There are zero happy or charming mistakes that happen with pencil or pen hold true. The figures ended up looking a little more stiff than I wanted because I had to redraw every line 20 times. Lesson learned! Might end up pushing the colors around sometime in the future.

I made some paper dolls for my Lifestyles illustration class. Blogspot really mucks up the colors, but expect this babies to get a little more clothed throughout the semester.

Sao Tome & Principe Map

Over the summer I went on a MICA trip to Sao Tome & Principe for a little over a month. One of the plantations we intended on visiting was so difficult to get to that the vans had to turn around and we had to continue on foot. The walk itself too probably about an hour and a half, but here's a map of that little excursion.

I'll probably upload a few sketchbook pages during some down time this semester, if there is any of that.
